About

Meg & Sweets
Two women at the beach with their husky dog between their legs smiling.

Dogs have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. From fostering and pet sitting in my younger years to teaching classes and working one-on-one with clients. My professional journey, however, truly began when I fostered my current dog, Sweets. She is complex, strong-willed, and endlessly funny — and she has been the most influential teacher I’ve ever had. Working with her has shaped me into the compassionate and thoughtful trainer I am today: one who genuinely supports both dogs and the people who love them.

My work is guided by a deep respect for the human–dog relationship and a belief that meaningful change happens when both sides of the leash feel seen and supported. I have a certificate through the Karen Pryor Academy for Training and Behavior (KPA), I am Dogsafe Canine First Aid certified, and I am a member of both the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants (IAABC) and the Canadian Association of Professional Dog Trainers (CAPDT). Additionally, I have spent the past three years working alongside the talented team at BabyDog and Tomey K9, where I teach group classes and also provide individualized training sessions.

My Approach

My approach is grounded in science-based, positive reinforcement training. While I do not use aversive tools like e-collars, prong collars, choke chains, etc., I do believe in meeting people with understanding, not judgment. I’m always open to respectful, honest and collaborative conversations about training approaches. My philosophy centers on kind, clear, and effective communication — prioritizing an approach that supports learning, wellbeing, trust, and joy for both dogs and their humans. Continuing education is a cornerstone of my practice, and I regularly participate in courses, conferences, webinars, and classes with fellow trainers to ensure I’m offering thoughtful, up-to-date support. I am working to obtain my Certified Dog Behavior Consultant (CDBC) designation.

Alongside my training work, I hold a master’s degree in sustainability with a focus on human–animal relationships. This academic background continues to shape how I approach my work: with curiosity, empathy, and an understanding of the broader systems that influence how humans and animals coexist. My goal is to help dogs and their people build lives together that feel connected, fulfilling, and sustainable.

When I’m not working with clients, you can usually find me looking for new cafés/eateries, trying my best to keep my plants alive, and of course, adventuring, camping, and training with Sweets!

I know reaching out for support can feel vulnerable, especially when you’re navigating complex behaviors. Compassionate Canine is a supportive space, and I’m here to help you cultivate a more empathic, effective, and sustainable relationship with your dog.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Long Have You Been Working With Dogs?

I’ve been working with dogs for over 10 years. I started out dog sitting and walking, which quickly grew into fostering dogs of all breeds and temperaments and helping prepare them for adoption through foundational training. I also volunteered with a local training company, assisting with puppy classes and group walks, where I deepened my hands-on experience and understanding of canine learning.

As my passion for behavior and the human–dog relationship grew, I pursued professional education and earned my certification through the Karen Pryor Academy. Since beginning my professional training career in early 2023, I’ve worked with a wide range of behavior cases, helping dogs and their people build clear communication, confidence, and lasting skills.

Do You Belong To Any Organizations?

How Do You Stay Up-to-Date With Training Techniques?

Continuing to educate myself is incredibly important to me. Dog training is an evolving field, and I’m committed to continuing my education to ensure I’m using the most effective, humane, and science-based methods available.

I regularly attend webinars, workshops, and conferences, and I participate in continuing education through organizations like the International Association of Behavior Consultants and the Fenzi Dog Sports Academy. I also stay engaged with current research in animal behavior and learning theory, collaborate with other trainers, and consult with veterinary and behavior professionals when appropriate.

Continuing to learn allows me to provide thoughtful, evidence-based training that supports both dogs and their people.
